Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Basharat S — 28 Nov 2007
Dark, atmospheric tale set in a converted monastry in the foothills of the himalayas, explores the hidden passions that erupt in the confines of monastic life. Based on the novel of the same name by Rumer Godden, this movie features the late Deborah Kerr as a nun sent on a mission to set up a monastry in a rural village.
Watch out for the final scene, as the monsoon rains finally arrive - the camera pans back as the drops of rain water hit the lotus leaves - this scene was recaptured in Saving Private Ryan, an indication of its huge influence on contemporary film-makers.
Great cinematography by Jack Cardiff. One of Powell's and Pressburger's best films.
