Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Adam Z — 31 Aug 2007
Way, way ahead of its time, Black Narcissus tells the story of a group of Nuns who move into an old residence in the Himalayas with the intention of teaching the native children with a view to civilising them.
What actually happens is that the Nuns themselves start to regress into their own pasts, and in particular the sexually repressed Sister Ruth who goes stark raving bonkers. There is much to enjoy here, especially the visuals which are a joy to the eye.
Although made in the 40s, Black Narcissus feels like a contemporary art film, and is a much underrated classic that needs to be enjoyed today.
