Review of Black Mass (2015) by Giacco C — 12 Jan 2016
The centerpiece of the film is Depp's portrayal of Whitey Bulger. His performance is excellent, chilling, and scary. He makes Bulger into such an intimidating figure - as I'm sure he was in real life - and weaves pretty seamlessly between this attractive and sweet man in one moment... to a horrible and dangerous killer in the next.
The story was subpar though. Nothing of note really, just that things happened and there wasn't too clear of an explanation why. The story just builds to the framing arc of his gang buddies taking their deals to save themselves.
Great cinematography of Boston throughout, painting a really cold and bleak picture of a setting perfect and fitting to the story of Whitey Bulger.
Watch this for Depp returning to a good dramatic role that he knocks out of the park, not for the story itself.
