Review of Black Mass (2015) by Brandon W — 17 Jul 2016
Black Mass is directed by Scott Cooper, and it stars Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Kevin Bacon in a biographical crime drama about how Whitey Bulgar's criminal life is, and how he gets away with it throughout his life.
I was pretty excited to see it for a long time but since it was out on DVD, I haven't got the time to see it until I saw it on HBO, and it was definitely worth the wait. Johnny Depp is fantastic in this as he's really scary in this, and I haven't a performance from him this good in years.
The other actors like Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, and even Corey Stoll who has a small role are great in it and brought their own energy to this film. The characters are memorable, especially what Whitey has done that's very illegal.
The writing by Jez Butterworth and Mark Mallouk is well written that it takes itself serious, and it brings the horror out from the characters. Black Mass is really up in my alley, and it's an amazing film with a great story.
