Review of Black Death (2010) by Alan P — 13 Mar 2011
I had pretty low expectations for this one and was drawn to it mainly due to the Bean factor. It turned out to be a lot more interesting than the film I was expecting, with a relatively "realistic" take on witches amidst the black death. Oddly enough the most interesting part of the film are the hunters devout wills, which although it is what justifies their violent ways is almost admirable in how unshakeable their faith is.
The film has a nice nod to "Wicker man" which is made funny by the fact that "Darling" from "Blackadder" is the leader and there's a fairly nasty segment which feels a bit like "sAw: the dark ages" which culminates in an interesting ending. What carries the film is the fact that all the actors (excluding the witch) take their roles very seriously when they could have easily decided to ham it up and this gives weight to christian's convictions. It's still firmly in the B movie category but it scores highly in taking a non-standard approach to the medieval witch hunt genre.
