Review of Black Death (2010) by Clayton F — 14 May 2011
Christopher Smith is a fascinating director, and I really enjoy the way he has been exploring different subgenres of horror in his previous work. Severance's mix of black comedy and slasher was a particular favorite.
With Black Death, he takes another turn. It is really a historical drama, although it certainly has brutal scenes and aspects of horror in the story. It features a smart script and great performances by the leads.
I thought it was quite good, but some viewers have objected to the slow start and probably also to the philosophical ambiguity in this story. It opens up questions about belief, superstition and cruelty without giving any easy answers.
