Review of Black Death (2010) by Robert J B — 21 May 2011
An interesting journey through the darkness and violent despair of 14th century England and the deadly Bubonic Plague. Powerful and haunting with great performances from all, Sean Bean and the Witch in particular.
But most of all a deadly reminder of the danger and horrors of taking religion too far. Although by no means a great film I think it definitely deserves a look. Should appeal to most horror fans or anyone interested in the time period.
I thought the beginning was a little slow as it took awhile to really get moving, at least from an emotional standpoint. But as our characters eventually find themselves in their "unholy" predicament(and do they ever) they are truly lost and I could't help feeling for them.
The movie does get you thinking about the so-called infallible truths that religion poses and we see the incredible violence dished and suffered on both the Christian and pagan side, and by the end we see a bit of a twist that while isn't completely shocking, should be moving on some level and makes us think on the subject after the credits roll.
In the end isn't that what a good movie should do after all?
