A dark period film with horror elements. The atmosphere is excellent. The acting is very good. The fight scenes are superb. The depiction of religion and its role in Medieval society is very good and raises intelligent issues without proposing simple answers.
Some may find the ending too ambiguous or too much of a downer but it worked for me. As is true for all good historical dramas, there are aspects of this story that are highly relevant today.
