Review of Black Death (2010) by Andy D — 14 Jul 2011
I expected this to be sub-par, but was pleasantly surprised.
Sean Bean continues to forge himself a very solid sideline career playing Boromir in EVERYTHING, and I confess that I thought this was going to be 'Boromir vs. The Bubonic Plague' with a sketchy plot and dodgy cast.
But its not.
The cast list is very solid, and all actually give very solid, believable performances, and the plot is based around the arrival of the 'Black Death' in Britain in 1348, which wiped out nearly half the population of the UK, and caused the very foundations of Christian Faith in our land to be questioned. A village secluded in marshlands seems to be escaping the plague, and of course the Church wants to know how this can be (remember EVERYTHING was something to do with God in those days!) so Boromir...sorry...Ulrich (Sean Bean) is sent with his men to find out the real deal.
The film has a definite creepy, eerie atmosphere to it, and the battle scenes are pretty darn brutal, with no lack of blood and guts being chucked about.
But all that said, this is still nothing great, or exceptional. Just very solid fare for its genre.
