Review of Black Dahlia (2006) by Rosanna Y — 28 Feb 2011
Spectacularly disjointed retro-noir that feels like a succession of isolated scenes rather than a coherent narrative. According to imdb thereï¿ 1/2(TM)s a three hour directorï¿ 1/2(TM)s cut knocking about somewhere, which may fill in some of the gaps, though I imagine the borderline ludicrousness of the increasingly histrionic performances would not be significantly lessened by a longer running time.
Overall, De Palma seems much more interested in pictures than in story, and in a way thatï¿ 1/2(TM)s something to be celebrated ï¿ 1/2" I wonder if heï¿ 1/2(TM)d have been happier in the silent era.
Anyway, itï¿ 1/2(TM)s an interesting mess, but worth a go if youï¿ 1/2(TM)re in a forgiving mood.
