Review of Black Crab (2022) by Healingtoolbox — 16 Jan 2023
An accomplished fable on antiwar and anti-bio-weapons topics. Uncommon for this genre, the script and directing discourages strong identification with the lead or any character. Even more surprising, the first 20 minutes has no obvious scene-setting, character origins, establishing shots, nor any orientation to who are the two world powers slugging it out, nor why.
The whole thing takes place in an unspecified dystopia. Yet, this is sufficient if you are telling a fable. The first familiar genre trope film offers a genre "track" comes 20 minutes in when the mission is revealed.
The effect is the audience is a disoriented as the characters are. This I think explains the many low scores by critics. As a writer, I found this quite daring and curious. The acting is solid; the third act is solid, rare for an original fable.
