Review of Black Book (2006) by Paul P — 25 May 2008
A really terrific film from the crazy Dutchman.
More of a thriller than a war movie, this is a very personal tale and it had me engaged from the opening scenes until the end. I had written Verhoeven off a while ago but the guy has put together a very classy and beautiful looking film. The plot has too many twists at times but I didn't really care about that. The characters are nicely developed and the supporting cast put in some solid work. As good as they are, this is Carice Van Houten's film. She carries this film from start to finish with quiet confidence. One of the better female leads that I have seen in a long time. She is never showy but she grabs your attention and takes you along with her. I'm officially interested to see her opposite the Cruise in Valkrie...
All told, this was an unexpectedly great film that really benefit's from Carice's presence.
