Review of Black Book (2006) by Konnor L — 09 Jun 2008
This is the first Dutch film by director Paul Verhoeven who ditches his trademark over the top satire for a (tries to be) serious demeanor in this three hour war film about a Dutch-Jewish spy who infiltrates a Nazi base through her, rather wonderful, body.
The film itself lacked substance and Paul never sheds his ridiculous directing style despite it serving no purpose in this film. The cinematography is nice, and I guess the performances are solid (it's hard to judge when actors go from English, to Dutch, to German).
It's worth watching if you had Dutch relatives like I do that fought in the resistance but otherwise you can skip it.
