Review of Black Book (2006) by Jani M — 15 Jun 2010
Finally got myself to watch this one. I'm a huge fan of Paul Verhoeven who has always been visionary genius of hollywoodfilms. When he went back to his roots and made dutch movie I feared the worst.
Zwartboek is so easy to compare with Inglorious Basterds because both happen in nazi occupied country durin WW2, both have woman as lead character whose family has been killed by nazis. For 2 hours of the film it is all depth and at same time very typically european movie.
At the end director just let's go and allows his unique style to rise and make the ending very enjoyable. Movie points several things about WW2 out that are rarely seen elsewere, like how badly dutch people treated people who were marked as traitors and how all nazis weren't complete monsters.
Even that movie wasn't as terrible as I was afraid it sure doesn't reflect Paul Verhoeven whom works I have learned to love. Can we please soon have new hollywood-verhoeven-movie?
