Review of Black Book (2006) by Gillian C — 15 Mar 2011
Quite an engaging watch, much like most of Verhoeven's movies, has enough dollops of sex, graphic violence and fast paced action. In many ways though the movie flies against the standard canons of the Hollywood war movie, there are shown to be good guys amongst the Nazis, as well as the bad guys amongst the Resistance.
And the way the Dutch behaved with some of the collaborators, was no better than that of the Nazis. Also the protagonist is not a male hunk, more of a slender looking damsel, who uses her wits, sexuality against two major enemies, the Nazis, and more worse people in the Resistance, who try to make her the scapegoat.
Though a bit cheesy at some points, still recommended for viewing, some of the sex and violent scenes are quite graphic though.
