Review of Black Beauty (1994) by Michael Y — 13 Jul 2010
The life story of a horse. Doesn't sound that exciting, but it was surprisingly enjoyable.
Black Beauty is a touching tale about hope and trust as our narrorating horse goes from owner to owner, learning about life and people. This movie also says something about loving and respecting animals, but surprisingly not in a hippie way. This movie is also very informative about the lifestyles of horses in the Victorian era. Pretty interesting. There are human connections in this movie too, but nothing that impressive.
This movie made me say out loud, "How the hell did they make though horses do that?" The horses in this movie really do project the feelings of the story and of the narrorator's description. When the horses were happy, you really saw that they were. When they were sad, you really thought they were sad. Whatever the narrorator was happening or how he was feeling you really got that feeling from the horses. It was impressive. Those horses did better acting than the cast of Twilight. And the soundtrack was done really well by Danny Elfman.
You have to be a real animal lover to love this movie. And though the movie was touching at times, it was a bit too soft. This movie was good, but I'm not itching to see it again anytime soon. It doesn't have that much of a lasting appeal. And watching horses the whole time isn't that much of an achievement in acting. This movie is just a very soft toned movie about a horse. That's all.
