Review of Black Beauty (1994) by David F — 21 May 2011
Handsome version of the classic novel by Anna Sewell will be great, (though at times very intense) for horse-loving kids, while being pleasant enough for adults as well - provided they can abide Alan Cumming's enthusiastic voice-over narration of the equine protagonist.
That aside, the Victorian production design is richly detailed, and the photography and the handling of the horses is very well done. Definitely gives you an idea of what life was like for working animals in those times, which was no picnic.
Nice to see 'Bedazzled' co-stars Eleanor Bron and Peter Cook in a few scenes as a couple of callous upper-class twits.
