Review of Biutiful (2010) by Johnson Y — 04 Jun 2011
This movie was far from beautiful in all respects, except for the acting done by Javier Bardem. Gritty and rough, this film showed people on the low-end of poverty struggling just to survive. There was much going on in this movie, and much was piled on Javier Bardem's character as he tried to carry the weight.
Sad in its honesty, because you know there are people out there just like the ones in this movie. Javier Bardem was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for this role, as well as the film nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, but sadly neither were achieved.
This film was not as glamorous as Black Swan or as majestic as The King's Speech, and unfortunately it was unfairly passed up for accolades. You're not going to love this movie, but you will be awestruck at the devastation and the fragility of human life.
Bravo to the director and Javier Bardem. Bardem proves once again why he is strikingly top-notch as an actor, and powerful in his portrayal and devotion to his roles.
