Review of Biutiful (2010) by Marisela V — 09 Jun 2011
Sometimes understated means subtle and poignant while other times it's a euphemism for underdeveloped, unfortunately the latter is the case with Biutiful.
Javier Bardem is BRILLIANT in this slow moving and uneven character study of a father facing a terminal illness and bequeathing to his children only an uncertain future. There is a supernatural side story that is never developed and feels either tacked on or a plot point simply abandoned, it never adds anything more than a sense of unevenness to the film.
