The film has little grasp on cohesiveness; although the film is crystal clear throughout and we always know what is going on, it's often hard to grasp why this particular scene or subplot had to be in the final cut.
This slows down the pacing so much that the majority of this 2 1/2 hour film is a tedious bore. But Bardem's incredible presence and his commanding performance manage to inject some much-needed humanity in Inarritu's miserablist material.
