Review of Bitter Moon (1992) by Bill B — 31 Jan 2009
It is really tough to pick a favorite film from such an artist like Roman Polanski, but I have to admit that I do love Bitter Moon. The "trip" that it offers is a very bizarre though fascinating one.
Two couples, two different stories, two different worlds, with more things in common than they think at first. A lot of sexual tension, delivered in a way that only the greatest ones can do it. Emmanuelle Seigner is by far one of the very best actresses I have ever seen on the big screen; her talent, combined with her exotic beauty and amazing attitude, make her a real cinema Goddess.
Kristin Scott Thomas was born to play her character here, no doubt; classy, beautiful, charming. I wish Hugh Grant could return to his roots before he got involved into a series of silly comedies that Hollywood offered him; he was really good before than happened.
There is no comparison between the Hugh Grant from Bitter Moon or even Four Weddings and a Funeral and the one that most of the world knows nowadays. Peter Coyote is at his best here. Same with Mr. Polanski of course.
Tiwsted, sophisticated, sexy... great film.
