Review of Bitter Moon (1992) by James M — 29 Jun 2010
Bitter Moon is pretty telling of the sordid perversions and sadisms of Roman Polanski. It's as sexy as any movie I've ever seen while being equally uncomfortable and grotesque; a film of confessions of sorts for Polanski. The dialogue is unsurprisingly brilliant and Emmanuelle Seigner is fantastic. I'm not altogether sure why the press generally frowned upon it, though I'm guessing it's simply because of the standards Polanski had already set for himself. Still, it has the same enthralling charm that is so recognizable in his work and it's easily as personal as anything else he's made. I really enjoyed it.
