Review of Birthday Girl (2002) by Muffin M — 05 Sep 2011
John (Ben Chaplin) is a shy, introverted bank teller who has never been lucky in love...or life, for that matter. Having lost faith in the idea of meeting his soul mate at the local supermarket, John gambles on a Russian mail order bride arranged via the Internet. There must have been a screw-up in his order because From Russia With Love delivers something quite different: the enigmatic Nadia (Nicole Kidman), a chain-smoking, cheaply clothed, mysterious young lady whose English vocabulary consists only of yes. Who needs it, though, when there is the language of love...
Also stars Vincent Cassel, Mathieu Kassovitz, Kate Evans, Rebecca Clarke, Sue Maund, Alan Stocks and Ben Miller.
Directed by Jez Butterworth.
