Review of Birth of the Dragon (2017) by Tiffany G — 01 Sep 2017
I grew up watching Bruce Lee films, and this film, and the actor portraying Lee, did NOT DISAPPOINT! I loved Wong Jack Man's character. And, to the whitewashing comments, I took note of the fact that the white guy is NOT the one who saves the girl.
He gets the girl saved by his determined pleas to two Kung Fu masters, and THEY save the girl. Not a typical white washing at all. Could it have survived and thrived without a white guy? Yes and No. Yes, in another film.
Absolutely. However, the white guy represents the Western world Wong Jack Man is considered to have resisted the idea of teaching Kung Fu to. There's simply no reason for the abysmally low critic's rating.
Although, frankly there often isn't. We've learned in our household to pay attention to user reviews, and toss the self important out of touch critics' reviews to the wayside. Birth of a Dragon is one such film that fits this bill.
Ignore the critics. See the film. It's great, and brings back the cocky, charismatic spirit of the great Bruce Lee on the big screen ... if only for a couple of hours.
