Review of Birth of the Dragon (2017) by Christopher C — 24 Aug 2017
For the type of movie that this is (the kind that will be on Netflix before you know it), it is actually quite enjoyable. The portrayal of Bruce Lee was bothersome to me at first because its quite jarring to see him written to be an egotistical jock - type while Wong Jack Man's character is more like what I would expect to see from Lee in his humbleness and deep-rooted philosophical approach to Kung Fu, suggesting that Bruce was not the man we remember him as today until learning it from Wong Jack Man.
The legend behind Lee and Mans' fight is that Man was not happy that Lee was training non-Chinese students in his school and previous portrayals of who he was have often vilified him while here he doesn't even want to fight Lee at first, and even forms a friendship with one of Lee's students.
These extra character moments heighten the film from what could have been the cheap Bruceploitation film most people expect from it.
