Review of Birdy (1984) by David K — 05 Nov 2007
This is a very strange movie. I don't know how it came to be, but it features Matthem Modine and Nicolas Cage, both as soldiers wounded in Vietnam. Modine's character is catatonic, and Cage's is recovering from facial reconstructive surgery.
They grew up together, and Cage's character is brought in to try and get Modine's to "snap out of it." Very strange and sometimes feels like Cage is forcing the dialogue during his many monologues "with" Modine.
OK, the reason you can only see it once, is, of course, the ending. It is one of my favorite surprise endings in Film, and it's very simple, abrupt and funny, and seemlingly wrecks the film for later viewings. BUT, TMJ says check it out once. Maybe you'll like this story about Modine's character always having wanting to fly like a bird.
