Hollywood has a long and hostile tradition of mocking theater, and this movie is part of that tradition. We are supposed to both care about, and laugh at, Keaton's character's attempts to go from Hollywood to Broadway.

However, the tension and the humor are both based on something that resembles mental illness but is passed off as magical realism, which felt out of place. While there are things to like, mixing all these elements and more made the movie feel confusing, and undermined both the tension and humor for me.
