Review of Bird Box (2018) by Muldjord — 29 Dec 2018
A lot of this movie works. I don't mind that we never actually see whatever it is the characters are seeing. It helps the imagination creating those images by simply hearing what they utter when they see it. And that sort of turns it into a ghost story. Which I really like. I love it when things are moving around by themselves as if a poltergeist grabbed it.
I understand that this movie is more about Malorie's personal journey than it is about the forces at play. And it portrays that well - well-acted performance from Bullock. But it does make the movie feel lackluster in explaining whatever the phenomenon is. You keep expecting things to conclude or be explained. The things they introduce that are a certain way "just because". All we get is the vague explanation from that dude who did "internet research" on a similar topic.
If you can go in not expecting things to be explained, there's a lot to be enjoyed in the characters and personal journey. Enough to keep me interested. But I would have loved the other things to have been concluded better.
