Review of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) by Wendy S — 27 Nov 2016
This is a movie that made me cry hard towards the end. Really loved how Billy retorted the "mastermind" who tried to forge that Billy's story is "theirs," and the fact that Billy was able to connect with the Cheerleading lady.
Ms. Stewart's performance is outstanding- really loved the scene towards the end that she had to let her brother go; she vented her frustration by punching on the car. When Billy said "I do not know how I can let you be proud of me.
.." it really struck me hard. The Half-time Show, in the movie, is very well done. So many layers of story-telling-- the conflict between the stadium guards and the Squad, the fighting scene in Iraq, the personal life-and-death encounter by Billy, the slow bleeding of the person who tried to suffocate Billy -- it is deeply sad.
Plus the fact that so many people made profit out of the war. Something beautiful was gained out of all this unnecessary loss of lives, both the soldiers and people in Iraq, and that is the brotherhood, solidified by the experience of bleeding together.
