Review of Bigger Than Life (1956) by Ken T — 03 Apr 2010
One of the best films of the 50s. Nicholas Ray is perhaps THE Hollywood director of the 1950s. Bigger Than Life is about a man (played magnificently by James Mason) who is diagnosed with a potentially terminal disease but is prescribed a "miracle drug" - Cortisone.
The drug soon has the man beginning to breakdown - but Ray uses his breakdown as a way to skewer American morals, expectations and lifestyles in the 1950s. The family dreams of escape through travel, but are constantly reminded that they are in a jail of this consumer society.
