Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Carianne N — 14 Aug 2011

I really enjoyed this movie, despite my usual dislike of trashy cult-like films. It didn't take itself too seriously but still made you believe in what was happening, which is something unique for this genre (asian/fantasy/adventure/comedy-esque).

Kurt Russell is awesome as Jack Burton, a truck driver who becomes tangled up in a rescue situation when his friend's fiancee is kidnapped, and it seems like he's tried to replay that kind of role, but it probably didn't compare with this one- rugged, loyal loner guy who really needs a distraction and a girl.

There are a lot of pretty cool fight scenes, and all kinds of creepy people in ridiculously oversized hats, with a fair share of creatures and critters that just kind of randomly show up, and aren't explained.

Most of the story and chinese folk lore is explained though, so that you still have an idea of what the objective is and why everything is happening, and it works even better when you suspend every trace of disbelief you have.

If you like John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, asian black magic and would get a kick out of a non-Sex and the City Kim Catrall, then this movie should satisfy you!
