Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Rick R — 27 Mar 2012
Big Trouble in Little China (1986).
John Carpenter directed this cheesy adventure movie strictly for laughs with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but also as an homage to the Kung Fu movies of the 70s. Where Kurt Russell played Snake Plissken in Escape From New York as Clint Eastwood, he did tough-talking truck driver, Jack Burton as John Wayne in Big Trouble; and we eat it up.
Swaggering Jack Burton makes a delivery to San Francisco's Chinatown and finds that he's mixed up in a mystical battle of ancient Chinese sorcerer, David Lo Pan (played to the hilt by James Hong) and the kidnapping of green-eyed girls, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) and Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall).
Jacks friend, Wang Chi (Denis Dun) is engaged to Yin, so Jack agrees to help him and Egg Shen (Victor Wong) rescue her. What I love is that Jack is all talk and yet is more of a bumbling side-kick to Wang as he rescues his girl.
