Review of Big Stan (2007) by Brian H — 21 Apr 2012
I have no recollection of this film ever being in theaters, and maybe it wasn't, but I read description and has to see David Carradine as a down and out kung fu master. I'm not a big Rob Schneider fan, so I watched this in spite of him staring in the film, but it ended up actually being a fairly enjoyable low brown comedy.
The story is pretty dumb, Schneider is on his way to jail so he hires Carradine to make him a kung fu master before he's locked up. Scheider does become a master and then ends up taking on all the prison gangs.
Like I said, the story and jokes are awfully predictable, but it's the surprisingly quality cast that makes the below average material watchable. Besides Carradine, the other standout was Jennifer Morrison, who played very much the opposite of her normally smart and self assured characters on "House" and "Once Upon a Time", this time playing Schneider's eye candy, not so bright wife.
It was such a different character from what I'm used to seeing her as, I actually couldn't place her while I was watching the film. IMDB had to help me place her. The film also features Sally Kirkland, Scott Wilson, Richard Kind, M.
Emmett Walsh, Henry Gibson, Dan Haggarty (going back to his 1970s biker film roots), Marcia Wallace, Randy Couture, Don Frye, Bob Sapp and Olivia Munn. Probably Schneider's best film, but that's a pretty low bar.
