Review of Big Jake (1971) by Scott R — 24 Mar 2013
An interesting story squandered on bad directing and writing. I did enjoy the introduction to the movie with each character's special abilities being explained, but then was let down with them being very hyped up and were never really given the chance to show their full abilities.
Wayne had some good one liners, but then he had twice as many bad ones.
The ending seemed abrupt as well, and there was no reconciliation and I was left unfulfilled.
No one seemed to care about grownups, lives seemed to be worth a dime a dozen. But when it came to one little innocent kid, you need to go all out to save him. Not much sense behind that considering Wayne had not even met him, and cared less for his only sons than for his grandson who we never even knew who his father was.
Also, how did their ranch get to be so rich, they never really explained that. Was it cattle?
I did enjoy it however.
