Review of Big Fish (2003) by Dave A — 14 Jan 2013
Big Fish is one of my favorites, right up there with the likes of Cloud Atlas, Mr Nobody, Life of Pi, etc. For much of the same reasons as those mentioned, I love Big Fish because it feels like a massive experience, something to be watched, absorbed, and contemplated later on.
It's about a man who, throughout his and his son's life, dresses up his life stories in exaggerated fashions; the son has always been agitated by this, as it makes him feel like he doesn't know who his father really is.
It has a similar tone to Life of Pi in that it delves into why we silly human beings tell stories, and why we cling to magic and hyperbole in said stories. I love this one with a passion.
