Review of Big Fish (2003) by Jillian L — 10 May 2013
This is another movie that I started to watch when it first came out, but never finished it. I am so incredibly glad I went back and watched it. It is absolutely beautiful. It is definitely Tim Burton's best.
It has all of his fun whimsical director trademarks but stands apart entirely from the rest of his body of work. All of the acting is spot on, especially from Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney. Ed Bloom could come off corny, but they make him so genuine and charismatic that it simply doesn't matter.
Jessica Lange broke my heart, Billy Crudup and Marion Cotillard were lovely, and I loved seeing Helena Bonham Carter play both a crazy character (the witch) as well as someone normal. Yes, you have absolutely no idea what is fact and what is fiction, but it does not matter whatsoever.
Normally I'll watch a movie, check the run time, and think "oh there is still a half hour left." This movie? I thought "why is there only a half hour left?" I cried. Actually, I completely lost it.
Sobbed for like ten minutes. This is a beautiful story of parents and children that is a definite must see.
