Review of Big Fat Liar (2002) by Eric On His Fantasy Quest V — 06 Oct 2008
Audiences, get ready for the big fat fun and action. Fourteen-year-old Jason Shepard has a reputation for stretching the truth. No one believes him. He is failing class. So when the famous Hollywood producer Marty Wolf steals his class assignment and turns it into a scripted movie, Jason travels all the way from Michigan to Los Angeles to claim his credit. I'm surprised by all the humorous film moments here, most of them Jason and Kaylee - and everyone in the studio, too - do revengeful tactics just to force the deceitful producer to reveal his truth. And part of "Big Fat Liar" makes it look like a Blue Man: Marty becoming blue-skinned is definitely the most memorable moment ever! Whatever Jason did in his class essay, titled "Big Fat Liar" as a movie within a movie, I think he definitely deserves the grade. Good effort, Shepard!
Directed by Shawn Levy, "Big Fat Liar" has good acting performances from the following cast members, including a "Malcolm In The Middle" star and former Nickelodeon star:
1.) Frankie Muniz (Jason Shepard).
2.) Amanda Bynes (Kaylee).
3.) Paul Giamatti (Marty Wolf).
4.) Amanda Detmer (Monty Kirkham).
5.) Donald Faison (Frank Jackson).
6.) Lee Majors (Vince).
7.) Sandra Oh (Mrs. Caldwell).
Oh my goodness, until recently, I didn't know John Cho (of "Harold & Kumar" fame) is in the film, playing a film director! But I know Jaleel White, formerly of "Family Matters", is playing himself here. One line of dialogue always kept me remembering all the time for so long, spoken by a tow truck driver in one scene: "They told me to pick up a little blue car. They didn't say anything about a little blue man.".
"Big Fat Liar" taught us viewers a valuable lesson that the truth is not overrated. The film, too, isn't overrated, either, and I liked it.
