Review of Big Eyes (2014) by Rodney E — 04 Jan 2015
It is good to see a Tim Burton movie that isn't a crappy retelling of an already established property (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Planet of the Apes, and Dark Shadows) or featuring Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter.
Not to say that Depp or Carter are bad but it got way too stock and predictable with their Burton association. Big Eyes isn't incredible but is entertaining to me for a few reasons. The set design is really good, particularly the house that the Keanes live in.
Danny Elfman's score is one of his best in years. The actual story of the paintings and the fraud behind them is good and Waltz's performance oozes his normal sleeze charm that makes Walter Keane more human.
