Review of Big Eyes (2014) by Esteban G — 10 Feb 2015
Soul stealing...This movie made me cry at the end in spite of it's ever hopeful Tim Burton pastel color palette. It looked like a painting, but watching it I felt sadder than the author's brilliantly painted little big eyed waifs. Or of her long faced self portraits that her husband tries to steal as well.
If you don't know the story a woman's charlatan husband, played brilliantly as usual by Christoph Waltz (who for me is the second coming of Jack Nicholson) takes credit for his wife's work, claiming that no one would be willing to buy work from a "lady artist".
My husband, who did stay awake in this film had little to add to what has already been said in regard to its brilliance, but if you like this story, please try reading.
THE SWAN THIEVES by Elizabeth Kostova. Both stories are profound & will make you wonder how many times women had to hide under a pseudonym.
Before we decide, "oh, that was just back then," remember, J.K Rowling released Harry Potter under her initials, so the little boys wouldn't think it was written by a GIRL.
Remember, girl or boy, movies are expensive, take a nap before it starts.
