Review of Big Eyes (2014) by Connor D — 18 Apr 2015
"Big Eyes" is directed by Tim Burton and stars two big modern celebrities in Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. The film tells the true story of a woman artist whose husband takes her big eyed paintings and claims them as his own, and becomes very rich and famous for them. He gets so caught up in his fame, however, that he gets caught up in his lies that he himself cannot decipher what is true and isn't, and his wife is starting to get fed up with the situation as a whole, because she isn't fond of her own husband claiming something that isn't his.
I will start out by saying this: "Big Eyes" is Tim Burton's best film since his similarly titled film, "Big Fish." I like this Burton film so much because Burton didn't try to overdo things. It is very secure and it seems like he was really trying to make something that people can truly call art (Ironic because of the premise of the movie, I know). The two leads were very good, despite the fact that Waltz did kind of overdo some of his scenes, but that doesn't take away from an overall great performance. This film is shot with a lot of skill, it looks great, and the story is a lot more touching since it's a true story, and when the real-life woman artist claims that it couldn't have been done any better, then there can't be any better praise.
Overall, "Big Eyes" is a surprisingly locked down film with great tremendous central performances and can be enjoyed by all audiences. 7.9/10.
