Review of Big Eyes (2014) by Amilcar A — 01 Jan 2015
Big Eyes was supposed to be weak and mediocre and instead it's a charming and fun film. It's not a great movie and it's neither art nor a greatly creative Hollywood production. This is the kind of movie you take your grandma to see and they will enjoy it. It's clean and safe.
It was also a nice surprise as I learned more something new about art. I was not particularly familiar with Keane and while i'm not a fan I think it was new and original.
What fails Big Eyes is that as with most art movies. the focus is on the personal drama and not on the art and the creativity. This movie is a bit better than others but it still feels like painting was a side product and not the main focus.
Perhaps not a movie that should be anyone's goal but if you have an old parent, grandparent or a date that would be horrified with Chris Rock, take them to see this.
