Review of Big Eden (2000) by Giffy G — 30 May 2008
Hearwarming and wonderful. The place became real, the people became real (hell, the Widow Thayer is my new personal hero), and I really, really cared what happened to these people. I did notice that gay people were problematized and straight people were rendered blameless (that did not slip by me), but it came across as the way people SHOULD act, rather than the way people DO act.
I also noticed the oh-so racist indigenous flute playing whenever The Native was onscreen by himself. However, this movie is an example of a great movie where I don't like the main character. It was just a really good movie.
