Review of Beyond the Wall of Sleep (2006) by Daniel S — 23 Sep 2014
A magnificent misfire. While an utterly terrible film by almost all measures, it's a great example of soaking-wet hamminess and cinematographic incompetence that's absolutely hilarious to behold.
I won't defend the quality of the movie for an instant, but while it won't scare or intrigue, this amateur mess is sure to entertain. One of my biggest outright gripes is the film being pointlessly shot in black and white.
Maybe it was intended to give it a period feeling? Towards the end, we (inexplicably) are treated to some color shots of the scenes- and they actually look very nice! It appears to have been shot on location rather than on sets, and the spooky, interesting color schemes of the place are really very visually appealing.
I was rather miffed the movie denied us that all for the sake of some completely unconvincing nod to the setting's era, which they didn't even stick with all the way through. The rest of the missteps of this film, however, are unintentional comedic gold.
