Review of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) by Kendra E — 08 Dec 2007
Remember that scene in "Look Who's Talking" where Kirstie Alley, admiring her lactating breasts, says "God, I look a Russ Meyer movie"? Well, here's his best known one.
To start things off...there's a hell of a lot of gratuitous nudity and sex in this. Gratuitous to the point where there's a naked woman dancing around in the middle of a party because she's 'just showing off her body', people screwing in cars, on beaches, and in cornfields, and some random gay and lesbian action that adds nothing to the movie.
Despite how bad it sounds, the movie manages to be highly entertaining and surprisingly funny trash for about an hour and a half.
What really sinks my star rating is the ending. I won't ruin it, but I'll just say it's offensively violent and kills the earlier lighthearted tone. That also raises a lot of questions on what the movie's even trying to be.
NOTE: Roger Ebert wrote the script to this.
