Review of Beyond the Sea (2004) by Tammie K — 03 Feb 2011
A very underrated film. Yes the film takes its liberties with facts, but as they said in the film, "Memories are like Moon beams, we do with them what we wish." Kevin Spacey did a great job as Bobby Darin.
Though, yes he was older than Darin, when Darin died in real life, but that doesn't really effect the performance or film at all. This is Spacey's show and was born to play the part. I had no idea Spacey was able to sing and dance like that.
He also did a great job with the directing. Kate Bosworth was good as Darin's first wife (they never mentioned they got a divorce and he got remarried), Sandra Dee and has great chemistry with Spacey.
The rest of the supporting cast such as, John Goodman and Bob Hoskins, all did good jobs here. This film actually would translate well into a broadway play, I think. The musical numbers are fun to watch and filmed beautifully.
The film does sorta lose momentum in the last half-hour, as far as past, but the film in a whole very good and underrated by critics (surprisingly since these are the kind of films they eat up normally).
