Review of Beyond the Rocks (1922) by Elise S — 25 Jan 2010
A lost silent film till it was found back a few years ago in a private collection in my small country. The Nederlands Filmmuseum enabled us to see this film. When they found it it was in such a bad state only one minute of it was watchable. They restored the whole film and it looks wonderful when you consider that the former owner didn't do anything to keep it in good state. What a work it must have been to restore it! It was worth it, though. Valentino and Swanson don't have a lot of chemistry, but they still make a very nice couple. They make the film, that has a simple plot, very enjoyable.
What was a bit weird, though, was the music that came with the restoration. It was nice, but in my opinion to modern for a film made in 1922. There are also sound effects. These are quite irritable and once came so unexpected, that it scared the hell out of me.
Still, I'm very greatfull the Nederlands Filmmuseum restored it. It's a film.
