Review of Beyond the Lights (2014) by Emily H — 04 Jul 2015
You still can't see me.
Noni is a budding super star with an overbearing mother manager. She gets to her breaking point and is about to commit suicide when a police officer working security that night saves her. They fall in love allowing both of them to learn more about themselves. Is there any hope for two completely different people to work?
"You want to be a runner up or a winner?".
Gina Prince-bythewood, director of Love & Basketball, The Secret lives of Bees, and episodes from the television series Everybody hates Chris, The Bernie Mac Show, and Girlfriends, delivers Beyond the Lights. The storyline for this picture is interesting and unfolds well. It has several unique and entertaiing elements. The cast delivers average performances and includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver, Machine Gun Kelly, and Danny Glover.
"My whole life is in someone else's hands.".
My girlfriend thought the previews looked interesting for this when it was first released. We recently grabbed this from Red Box and I felt it was fairly straightforward. The movie doesn't have many surprises but there are some clever glimpses into a celebrity's life. This is worth a viewing but I'd wait till cable.
"I see you.".
Grade: C+.
