Review of Beyond the Hills (2012) by Mihai M — 14 Oct 2012
What a wonderful film! Gripping, multi-layered, and above all unjudgmental in unpicking the complex issues of faith which lie beneath this infamous case. I loved the clean-cut craftsmanship of film - its long, beautifully calibrated shots convey a very powerful sense of place and keep us close to the characters.
The characters, are finely drawn - not just the principals but the doctor, the policeman the brother - and Stratan and Flutur undeniably merit their Cannes acting prizes. A very satisfying piece of cinema from a film-maker with an original and highly persuasive vision.
