Review of Beyond the Hills (2012) by Josh J — 24 Mar 2013
To start with the main positive is that the film has fantastic cinematography and the camera angles are intelligent. One of the main issues is that you don't care about any of the characters. The main girl who you are supposed to feel sorry for, you actually find incredibly annoying, the key relationship completely lacks chemistry, and the film plods along at a startlingly slow pace dragging out over 2 and a half hours! Some of the nuns are simply wailing caricatures.
Overall it misses tackling some powerful issues with any real bite. It fails to build enough tension or suspense to make it worth going to see.
