Review of Beyond Re-Animator (2003) by Michael O — 10 May 2008
When I watched this movie I had a feeling it could be better than the 2nd installment "Bride of Re-Animator" which was is a great fun movie even with a couple of flaws. The story for "Beyond Re-Animator" has been streamlined and doesn't suffer from the same problem of being a bit of a mess as it's predecessor.
However it does feel like you're watching a kids movie with the gore turned up (although it's not as gory as the first two). The gags aren't darkly humorous as they were before, rather a bit obvious.
The movie is carried by Jeffrey Combs who is great to watch playing the character Herbert West. The nemesis figure in the prison warden however, is irritating and gets way too much screen time and along with the overall "kiddyfying" of the story and characters lets the movie down.
Hoping the next instalment gets the balance right.
